I at last watched DVD of the movie "Letters from Iwojima" last night. (well... actually it was very early morning today) Although of course I knew the film was directed by Clint Eastwood, it looks like a Japanese local film to me.
The story is... based on kinda famous story of General Kuribayashi Tadamichi, but attracts many Arashi fans all over the world because of Ninomiya's appearance. I'm not intending to offend those Arashi (or Nino) fans, to me Watanabe Ken and Ihara Tsuyoshi's dominating presences are much more impressive, Nino is better than Matsujun in acting, though.
By the way, this sounds strange even to many of us, Iwo Jima is a part of Tokyo, although it's over 1,000km away from us.
I watched the Tagalog movie "Anak" at last. The film was created in the year of 2000, ok, this isn't latest movie for sure, but after I finished watching the movie I found this is a remarkable film.
I guess the background of this film might not be understandable for many Japanese, but personally I myself really enjoyed this movie. Fun? Of course it's not Hollywood fun-fun-then-happy-ending type movie, but I prefer the films with something meaning or message.
Although I don't have my own kids, never in real life, I felt I was Carla's father while I was watching the film, and wondering how would I do if I was her dad really.
Kurt Vonnegut died in New York. He was 84 years old, and hadn't been writing anything for about 2 years according to the news reporting his death. When I was a teenager, I always enjoy reading Sci-Fi novels including his works. I believe that I'm just the one of so many people in the world (well, most of them are bit older generation people I guess) who enjoyed his novels. Since I didn't understand English well at that time, most of those books are Japanese editions, though.
"Slaughterhouse-5" must be his representative work I think. Although I think I read that he used to deny it, I guess he wrote that novel based on his own experience of being under friendly attack/bombing by RAF and US Army Air Force while he was in Dresden as one of American POWs. And to me it's very suggestive to remember bombing on Tokyo in WWII. Myself? Oh no, I'm not that old to experience that by myself, but my father who was a college student at that time, used to tell me about his own experience. He was ordered to clear up and move dead bodies in Tokyo. And he was about to be recruited as a member of Kamikaze attack teams (he wore glasses already, so that he would be a pilot of Kaiten, suicide kamikaze attack submarine, darn it's almost human driven torpedo...) but the war was over by getting dropped A-bombs.
Suddenly I found something about myself now. I seldom read novels these days. Why? What makes me busy not to have enough time to do so? Or am I really busy spending life today? I think I'm not, I guess I'm just lazy now, what a bad habit I've got lately...
Although I'm not a Buddhist, am joining my hands in prayer for him now...("gasshou" in Japanese)

News says that Production I.G. talks to Koudansha (in kanjis 講談社) which holds the right of "Ghost in the Shell" series, to make "actual version" of that manga/anime. Seems they Production I.G. is planning to produce its movie (by actual human characters/actors) in Hollywood in near future. I wonder if it gets success... 嫌な予感...
